King Sunny Ade: The Hybrid Of Inspirational Dance And Trado-African Music

King Sunny Ade

After the death of Bob Marley, a recording company known as Island Company began looking for another third world artist to sign up since Arista Record has sign Fela Kuti into contract. The search prompted producer Martin Meissonier to introduce king Sunny Ade to Chris Blackwell, leading to the releasing of Juju music in 1982. After this, many music aficionados were quick to point out that Sunny Ade’s brand of juju music could not be ignored by anyone at that time.

Today, this seminal recording is often acclaimed as oneof the most important records from Africa while King Sunny Adeniyi remains an undisputed king of juju music, the dance-inspiring hybrid of western pop and traditional African music with roots in the guitar tradition of Nigeria. Ade and his band (African beats) continue to weave an infections blend of electronic guitars, synthesizers and multi-layered percussion. In addition, he remains a force to recon with in  Nigeria the money made from his early albums has been used to launch an oil firm, mini company, night club, film and video production company, public relation firm and a record label specializing in recording by African artists. It’s been estimated that more than seven hundred
people are employed by Ade’s companies. However, for over 40 years, King Sunny Ade has been thrilling audience and listeners with music of broad social messages. Musically, it is a thrilling hybrid of western pop and traditional African music that incorporates electronic guitars and synthesizers with such indigenous instrument as talking drum.

Nevertheless, KSA’s music is characterized by, among other instruments, the talking drum an instrument indigenous to his Yoruba roots, the guitar and his peculiar application to juju music, which would easily put him in the same class as guitar musicians like Santana. Moreso, his music his in the age of old tradition of singing ewi “poetic lyrics” and praise of dignitaries as well as components of ‘juju” (traditional African belief) called the “Ogede” ‘casting a spell’. Hence, Ade’s music contributes a record of the oral tradition of his people for posterity. He was the first to introduce the pedal steel guitar to Nigeria pop music and also the first to introduce the use of synthesizers, clarinet, and vibraphone, tenor guitar, into the juju music repertoire such Dude and 'wah-wah' guitar lick.

King Sunny Adeniyi was born on September 22, 1946 into a Nigeria royal royal family in Ondo state. His father was a church organist, while his mother was a trader. Ade left grammar under the pretence of going to the University of Lagos. There in Lagos his mercurial musical career started but initially began with Moses Olaiya’s Federal Rhythm Dandies, a highlife band before he left to form his own band. ‘The Green Spots’, in1967. Frustrated by the exploitation of the record industry, Ade launched his own record label in 1974. in the decades since, the label released more than 100 of KSA’s recordings in Nigeria. He began to attract attention in the western world when 3 of his albums (juju music, synchro system and Aura), were released in in the early 80’s on the mango label a subsidiary of island records. Ade and His Africa beats made their debut American performances to enthusiastic crowds in 1983.

Meanwhile, in 1980s, KSA embarked on a career in Hollywood. His music was featured in the 1986 comedy ‘one more Saturday night’, and also he acted in Robert Altiman’s1987 comedy ‘O.C and Stings’. For almost 10 years, king Sunny Ade continued to release records and dominated the domestic music industry in Nigeria, while only vinly imports trickled out to the rest of the world. In 1996, he signed a new deal with Atlantic Records subsidiary, mesa (blue moon under which he released three records; ‘E Dide’ (get up), Odu, and seven Degrees North.

Although, juju music and synchro system showed signs that KSA was going to live up to billing as “the African Bob Marley”, but ‘Aura‘ was commercial disappointment and Island Records dropped Ade and his group. Meanwhile, the album titled “Authority of your ticket” was released in 1990, but it also failed to stir much commercial interest until when ‘E Dide (get up) was released in 1995 which offered hints that the best day of Ade and African beats were yet to come. Relentlessly, the group followed it in 1998 with another album ‘ODU” which was a brand collection of ancient Nigerian songs and it was nominated for a Grammy Award.

In 1996, He formed a super group, the way forward, featuring top-notch Nigerian musician. Beside, Ade and his African Beat have been featured in three films: juju music in 1988, live at Monteux in 1990 and roots of rhythm in 1997.

In year 2000 “seven degree north” album appeared and it was superb. Meanwhile, in the mid- 90s Ade founded the King Sunny Ade foundation an organization that include a performing arts center, a state of the art recording studio, and housing for young musicians and performance on a five acre tract donated by the Lagos state government.

In January 2002, KSA completed a years as president of the musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), which is a strong nation musician union. Besides, he consistently performs at a wide variety of parties and events, both public and private and now he intends using his newly recaptured free time to focus on his music.
Nevertheless, at the beginning of another round of tour of the United State and Canada in 2009, Sunny Ade was a visiting professor of music at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and in July the same year, he was inducted into Afro Hall Fame, at the Broolyn African festival, USA.

Furthermore, Sunny has collaborated with major artist such as Manu Dibango (WAKAFRICA) and Steve Wonder (played harmonica in Aura’). Likewise, his brief recordings with Island records’ opened the floodgates for other world music artist like Senegalese Youssou N’Dour, Mali’s Salif Keita and host of others.

Today, KSA has released over 111 albums to his credit and he is still making the waves as he tends not to retire from music. Despite at the age of 65years, he is still vibrant, active and more so, his dancing steps still drive the audience aware, at this junction, I will say thumb up to the ambassador of Africa music and hybrid of inspiration dance; KING SUNNY ADE

The Origin Of Osun Osogbo Festival

The Osun Osogbo festival is held in Osogbo, Osun state, southwest Nigeria, it is to celebrate a river goddess, Osun. The groove covers 75 hectares of ring- fence forest, alongside the Osun river in the outskirts of Osogbo town, western Nigeria. The groove in Yoruba cosmology is the domicile of  oosun, the goddess of fertility.
Osun is the Yoruba personification of the ‘water of life’ and the spiritual mother of Osogbo Township. It is a scared forest. Said to be and believed by some of its worshipers as the residence of the fertility goddess. Osun, the forest itself is full of shrines, works of art, sanctuaries and sculptures. The bulk of these offering are devoted to Osun, but many exist in reverence of other deities within the Yoruba pantheon as well. Within osun it is the sacred groove, an area of immense spiritual importance. The goddess is said to give properity and protection to her people if they built a shrine to her and respected the spirit of the forest.
According to one version of history, founders of Osogbo, who were hunters migrated from their previous settlement because of death of potable water, in the cause of their search for water, they came to the Osun groove and settle around the groove. In the process of cutting weeds and trees to get water, one of the trees fell on a pot belonging to the goddess. This angered the Osun goddess and she lamented seriously. The hunters appeased her and pledged annual sacrifice.
In another more acceptable version, it was believed that the goddess of the river was a living being, and the annual festival was to adore and appreciate her for her covenant which she never breaks. The Osun Osogbo festival started within the groove in 1370AD, when Oba Olarooye and his subjects settle at Ojubo, a place that is now called Osun temple. Oba Larooye set up the first palace at Osun shrine.
In the 13th century, something happened when the community was preparing for the next planting season. A tree fell into the river and there was a loud voice, saying ‘Larooye, Olutimehin, you have destroyed all my dying pots” but the lesser spirits within the groove pacified the goddess of the river saying “Oso igbo pele o, oso igbo roar o,” meaning she should keep calm over the unfortunate incident, and that was how the name of Osogbo was derived.
The goddess of Osun then advised the communiti to move to the other side of the river and they obeyed and moved to “Ontoto” where they established another palace, and a flourishing market. While they were at “Ontoto” Olutimehin, the great hunter went on hunting expedition and suddenly saw spirits within the groove dancing round a 16-point lamp. He saw the lamp through incantations and brought it back to the palace to show Oba Larooye, the then Ataoja of osogbo.
When the goddess of the river heard about the seizure of the lamp, he invited Oba Larooye and Olutimahin the great hunter, and told them that the fact that the lamp was seized was not a problem, but they must be sure they celebrate the lighting of the lampnine days to the grand finale of Osun festival and the lamp must be on from 7.00pm till dawn.
The Ataoja, the traditional ruler of osogbo land, with all princes and princesses of osogbo, are expected to dance round the 16 point lamp three times before the day breaks, during the dance, the lamp will be put off by the traditional chief called Baale Oba. The chief will keep the lamp till the following year. The Ataoja will dance round the market with his chiefs before returning to the palace. The goddess of Osun River also presented a calabash containing some antiquities to Oba Larooye and Olutimehin. The goddess instructed that a young virgin selected through Ifa divination should convey the calabash to the river during the grand finale of osun festival and the traditional ruler, with the osun priestess (yeye osun) must hold the calabash to welcome a messenger know as “Iko”
Both the monarch and priestess must hold a parrot feather at the head to welcome the messenger, who is believe to be sent annually by the goddess of Osun,
This messenger will pour curative water into the calabash held by the priestess and the monarch, and it is believe that any barren who drink out of the curative water will be bless with a child or children the following year, the water also cure all form of ailments.
The festival which began since 1370 AD continued till now with pomp and ceremonies. All indigenous of osogbo from all parts of the world come home every year to honor the goddess and make their requests know to her.
Since then, osogbo has remained a peaceful, progressive and benevolent city without war or pestilence. This pact which is rekindled in August every year is the foundation of a cultural fiesta that has catapulted itself into world recognition as on of the largest tourist attractions in Nigeria.
The Annual Osun-osogbo festival is held once a year around August. The groove is seen as the reposition of kingship, as well as the spiritual heart of the community. The festival invokes the spirits of the ancestor kings and rededicates the present Oba to osun, as well as reaffirming and renewing the bond between the deities represented in the sacred groove and the people of Osogbo.
The festival has a two week programme of events starting with the traditional cleansing of the town called “Iwopopo”. This is followed by the lighting of 500 year old sixteen point lamp three days later, called “Olojumerindinlogun.” The assemblage of the crowns of the past ruler (Ataojas), “Iboriade,” for blessings led by the Ataoja who is the traditional ruler. The finale of the festival is a processing of the whole city, led by the maid, Arugba, propelled by Yeye Osun, and the committee of priestesses headed by the Oba and priest, all accompanied by the drumming, singing and dancing. The Arugba takes the people age-long prayers to the groove in a calabash which can only be carried by a virgin, which signifies purity. The calabash is filled with food such as moin-moin (baked bean), eko (baked millet) and oil to the river, while the people of the town follow her and pray for their wishes for the year. The Arugba volunteers to carry the calabash, and keeps her purity. The river goddess in turn grants her wisdom and power. The Arugba commands the respect of the entire community for that role.
Year in year out, the Osun Osogbo festival attracts a mammoth crowd, with unprecedented list of eminent personalities gracing the festival which is celebrated at the shrine, in the outskirts of the capital of Osun State.

10 Ways To Get On Your Boss's 'A-List' Without Sexual Attachment

Want to know how to get that promotion? Contrary to popular belief, it‘s not when you sleep or sneak your way to his bed that makes you stand out and look like a real star. Face it, whether you like it or not, you’re in charge of your relationship with your boss. No one will ever share as much concern as you do that the quality of the relationship helps you achieve your goals. At the same time, every boss wants employees who do their job well. But even among highly competent employees, there are distinctions. But, if you have just secured a new job, one obvious question that crop into your mind is how to make your boss like you? Frankly, as a fresh entrant into a new environment, making your boss like you isn’t difficult. It just takes a little common sense.
Thus, looking for a way to score high points without any sexual violation, you can practice the habits listed below and you will be well on your way to getting that promotion! While the habits will also help you develop a positive, ongoing, supportive relationship with your boss-a relationship that serves you well, your manager well, and, as a consequence, your organization well.

  1. Keep communicating. Especially at the beginning of your relationship- that is, when either you or the boss is new to the job, it is okay to ask question! If you don’t know the answer and couldn’t find the answer, just ask! If you think there might be a better way of getting around an issue, suggest! Communicate, don’t just sit there and keep up the constant stream of communication unless your boss likes it. It’s best to ask directly whether you are given the boss enough information or too much and never assume how thing are done or need to be done. When you are not clear always ask because your assumption may get the work done wrongly, while the time needed to do other things will be spent correcting it or asking to clarify.
  1. Acknowledge what the boss says:- bosses appreciate ‘responsive listening’ when your boss ask you to do something or suggest way for you to improve your work, let him know you heard and understand what he just said.
  1. Collaborate and take initiatives:- when your boss has a new idea, respond to it in a constructive way instead of throwing up roadblocks. Be willing to brainstorm ways to get something done. And more so, you should learn to take initiative when the need arises or when the opportunity present itself, don’t wait to be ask what to do, do it on your own. Employer will expect you to have some level of common sense. You can also talk to other employees and see where you can combine effort and ideas. Thus, it is advisable for you to be part of a team if you are working with that team. Asking when you do not know does not mean that you cannot take initiatives.
  1. Build relationship:- you’ll make your boss look good if you establish a good rapport with your clients whether they’re inside the company or outside. Bring back what you learn- about ways to offer better customer service, for example—to your boss, this is also helpful for your own career development. In addition, make friends at the office. If a co-worker is struggling, see what you can do to help him/her out; if he/she is having a bad day, see if you can make him smile. You want to be talked about, but only in a good way!
  1. Understand how you fit in: - Is your boss detail oriented, or someone who keep his head in the clouds? Equally important is your understanding of what your boss wants in an employee. It may be for example, that a boss who is detail-oriented will expect his employees to be as well. But a boss who has no time for details may actually appreciate employees who do.
  1. Learn the boss’s pet peeves: - if your manager has said repeatedly that he hates being interrupted first thing in the morning, don’t run to his office to give him project update when you first get in.
  1. Anticipate the boss’s need: - once you have worked with your boss for a while, you should be able to guess what information he will want before attending to you. Learn, observe and ask how your boss likes things done. The best person to ask is your boss and those closest to him. Learn from other’s mistakes when they work with your boss. People will complain when the boss reprimands them, and that is the best time to learn what doesn’t go down well with the boss.
  1. Think one level up:- You still need to do your own job, of course. But when managers consider who deserves a promotion, they look for people who understand the issues that their bosses face. Be the re whenever help is needed. Is there a project that may need more hands? Take the initiative to ask for a role and your boss will appreciate the extra help. Even if your help is not needed, your boss would at least know you are willing to chip in. this is one of the easiest ways on how to make your boss like you.
  1. Open your self to new way of doing things;- when your boss comes to you with a new idea, don’t simply dismiss it. If you don’t think it will work, offer to discuss it further in ‘a mature, responsible, adult-like way. Thus, while we all like to think we know everything, fact of the matter is we don’t! be open to new ideas, new processes and new knowledge.
  1. Be engage in your work:- Arguing with your boss over request is not a good strategy, but neither is simply shrugging your shoulders and agreeing with everything your boss says. That means showing enthusiasm for your work and speaking up when you see room for improve. In your work don’t treat work like it is a pit stop. If you arrive to work, show that you want to be there. Use those talents of yours! Just because you are at work doesn’t mean you can’t have fun! Employers are primarily focused on whether or not you treat your work seriously. Showing your personality will help to make a few office friends, and of course, lighten the mood! You represent the company in which you are working for. If you are going to stand out, make sure it is in a good way!

The Questions Of Insecurity In Nigeria

Insecurity in Nigeria has posed a national questions in which up till this moment no formidable answer has been provided. If Britain had failed to proffer solution to insecurity challenges in the country before independence and Nigeria rulers failed to do this after almost 53 years of independence (1960-2013), something is definitely wrong with the approach so far. Does it not occur to the president that we should get back to the drawing board?
Safeguarding the sovereign, independence and territorial integrity of the state was the central pillar of Nigeria national security policy. Other guiding principles were Africa unity and independence, non-intervention in internal affairs of other states, and regional economic development and security cooperation. Subordinate goals included military self-sufficiency and regional leadership. In pursuing these goals, Nigeria was diplomatic and flexible, but it employed coercive method or measured force when necessary. Nigeria, was an active participant in the United Nations (UN), OAU and ECOWAS, in 1990, the leadership seemed intent on retrenchment, according priority to domestic political and economic problems and displayed a mature and conciliatory approach to foreign policy. Against the background of darting security challenges, Nigeria has experienced in recent years culminating into the Independence Day bombing, I can not help but ask: what manner of security apparatus protects Nigeria and Nigerians?

After the 2011 general election, the security situation became fluid, bombings and assassinations, politicians pushed forward agendas that have nothing to do with the well being of Nigerians; militants, terrorists, religions zealots and plain criminals become bolder and more sophisticated.
To an average Nigerian,   law enforcement and security issues are the business of the police, the SSS and the army. However, though these organizations coordinate operations and their briefs may overlap, there are clear boundaries. The Nigerian police are concerned with law enforcement, law maintenance, crime detection and public safety. The SSS is responsible for overt and covert measures to protect Nigeria, her institutions of state including the president and visiting foreign dignitaries. The Nigeria army safeguards the country’s territorial sovereignty but it can also be drafted into internal security operations when situation became too explosive for the police.
With this background, Nigeria ought to ask question about their security. Even if for national security purposes, our security chieftains do not answer these posers via press conferences, or on pages of newspapers, they should give them serious thought. Security, just like politics, is too serious to be left to the politicians.
How functional are the espionage or intelligence- gathering and analysis departments of our security agencies? Are the officers well trained well equipped and well motivated? Is their knowledge about covert or undercover operations up to date? Are round pegs being put in round holes? Imagine, what sense would it make to send a Christian-Igbo intelligence officer who has no in-depth knowledge of Hausa language to infiltrate Boko Haram?
Nigeria is a big territory peopled by heterogeneous groups with different interests and links. To whom do men and women we entrust our security on their loyalty?
At what point do such loyalty clash with what should be the security operatives guiding principles: ultimate loyalty to Nigeria as a united, single federal state? If both the citizens and government are not sure of this, then Nigeria is riding on the back of a tiger.
So, how do our security agencies relate their ‘overseas partner’? Do or can they pay attention to attainable intelligence from friends? Inspite of her vaunted independent Africanist foreign policy, Nigeria remains firmly entrenched in the capitalist pro-western bloc as a satellite state which has far reaching implications for our security agencies.
Almost 53 years of independence, have our security services rid themselves of the ‘us’ against ‘them’ mentality? It is not in the interest of any security service to antagonize the people it is supposed to be working for. It is time our security chieftains review their concept of ‘more presence, more sound, more thunder, no rain’ security measure Gun-toting, fierce-looking police officers may intimidate an average Nigeria who has only verbal bombs but they will not deter the determined terrorists, militant or assassin.

Why Men Batter And Abuse Women

Sometimes, women are always afraid of strangers but does it occur to them that their husband, lover, boyfriend are likely to hurt them the most. Presently, two-thirds of violent attacks against housewives are committed by husbands and one of the most dangerous places for women is her own home. Approximately 1,500 women are killed each year by husbands or boyfriends.
To some experts, there is no good profile for men who batter their women. They believe that men who batter are seeking a sense of power and control over their partners or their own lives, or because they are tremendously dependent on the women and are threatened by any moves on her part toward independence, some batter because that’s the only way they know how to be close to or relate to a partner, some grew up in violent households, where they watched their mother being abused by their fathers and where they themselves were abused, while some become violent under the influence of drugs or alcohol, although the substance themselves do not cause the violence. Seriously, it could be a simple matter, for instance, if she failed to empty the lint from the filter in the clothes dryer; or maybe dinner wasn’t just right, or maybe she decided to go shopping with her best friend without telling her spouse about it beforehand. But, I want to say that not all men who batter are stupid beings sometimes they know what they do is wrong but choose to do it their way.
Below are some characteristic of abusers and batter:

-          The abuser/batter sees women as objects. He does not view women as people. He has no respect for women as a group. He sees women as property and sexual objects.
-          An abuser/batter has low self-esteem. He feels powerless and ineffective. Although he may appear to be successful, inside he feels inadequate.
-          An abuser/batterer finds external excuses for his behavior. He will blame his violence on having had a bad day, alcohol or drug use, his partner’s behavior or anything that comes to mind to excuse hs violence action.
-          He may be charming and pleasant between his acts of violence outsiders may view him as a nice guy.
-          An abuser/batterer may display some warning signs such as: a bad temper, cruelty to animals, extreme jealous, possessiveness verbal abuse and/or unpredictability. However, abusive behavior in this context is divided into 5 heads:-
  1. Verbal Abuse:- Like name calling, threatening, intimidating.
  1. Emotional Abuse:- constant criticizing, display of extreme jealousy, publicly humiliation, isolating the partner and domination.
  1. Financial Abuse:- controlling the money, concealing joint assets, keeping the other impoverished, using partner’s money without consent. These abuses though may be witnessed in an infant form in the initial stages but in later stages they might take an inhuman form.
  1. Physical Abuse:- pushing, slapping, hitting, kicking, choking, pulling hair, biting, using weapons, tying the partner up, locking the partner in a room with denial of food.
  1. Sexual Abuse:- raping, physically attacking sexual parts, forcing the partner to perform sexual acts.
We cannot shy away from the fact that women also put it too far sometime while some posse bad character like nagging, and non appreciative character. However, when we consider the above bad habits of women closer, we can see they are somehow terrible, but what men should know is that nobody is perfect, and partners should learn to compromise and be patient toward each other. Thus, leaving a relationship, no matter how abusive, is never easy because women who leave or abandon their homes often opt for living in poverty, that’s a very difficult choice to make. There are many social, cultural factors that contribute to encouraging women to stay a d try and make the situation work because men who batter are not 100 percent hateful, they can be loving and attentive partners at times as such you should think about the adverse effect of this on your children as they get traumatized by witnessing violence in their family. In adding, the long- term effects of witnessing such violence can create a cycle of violence that spans generations. We know that many men who are abusive witnessed their mothers being abused and many were victims of physical abuse themselves. We also know that women who came from a family in which they witnessed their mother being battered are more susceptible to developing what is called ‘battered women’s syndrome.” Thus, you should fashion out a way to sort things out and make up with your husband. But they do not provoke their husband’s abuse in reality.
